International and Erasmus students
Studying in Pisa in English
We are Azione Universitaria Pisa, a student association with elected representatives at the University of Pisa. Most of this site is in Italian; this page collects what matters if you study here in English or on Erasmus. If something is unclear, write to us on WhatsApp or Instagram (links below) — in English is fine.

Coming on Erasmus
Each department has its own Erasmus office and coordinator: they sign your documents and answer the questions about your courses. The general steps:
- Get your University credentials. Register on the Alice portal as “Studente straniero senza codice fiscale” (foreign student without an Italian tax code).
- Apply with the incoming form on the Erasmus portal, which also has the practical guide on visas, residence permits and accommodation.
- Learning Agreement. You agree on a Before version with your department; if courses overlap or change, you update it with a During version. Course descriptions are in the course catalogue.
- On arrival contact your department’s Erasmus office to have your arrival certificate signed.
- Exams are booked on esami.unipi.it. Many are oral and in Italian: check with each lecturer.
- Before leaving the office issues your Transcript of Records and your attendance certificate.
Learning Italian: the first course is free
The University Language Centre (CLI) offers Italian courses for Erasmus students, from A1 to B2. The first course is free. Register on the CLI website with your Alice credentials and take the placement test: it decides your level. Courses usually run October–February and March–June. If you pass the final exam you can get credits on your Transcript of Records — you need at least 80% attendance.
Useful parts of this site
They are in Italian, but easy to use:
- Timetables by course — choose your area and degree, then year and channel. You can subscribe to the timetable in your phone’s calendar.
- Rooms without lectures right now — on a map, filtered by department.
- Today’s canteen menu — the DSU canteens in Pisa, with allergens.
- Housing, health care and transport discounts — chapters of our freshers’ guide.
For housing, the DSU portal Cerco Alloggio and HousingAnywhere, which the University works with, are the best places to start.
